HISTORY
The Columbus Ft. Benning Medical Association was established in 1985 by an esteemed group of Black physicians led by Dr. Delmar Edwards. The goal was to provide social and scientific collaboration for minority physicians in the Columbus and Ft. Benning area, as well as affiliation with the Georgia State Medical Association and the National Medical Association. In the early days, the organization collaborated with dentists, attorneys, and optometrists with a yearly holiday dinner dance called The Annual Medical Legal Dinner. Some of the initial charter members were Drs. Thomas Malone, Sylvester McRae, Curtis Fleming, Wayne Stanley, Alphonso Willis, Price Walker, James E.W. Crosse, John Peasant, Kenneth Bryant, Nancy Bryant, Roberta Young-de-Vastey, Glenn Duncan, and Martin Jeffries.
The organization has supported the historically black medical school, Morehouse College of Medicine, with a scholarship that later was named in honor of Dr. M. Delmar Edwards. The organization continues to provide advocacy and mentorship to young physicians, residents, and medical students in the area.
